Thought this might interest some people.

The Inner Temple as part of the 2008 renewal of its commitment to furthering the study and development of the law and the education and training of those who practise or intend to practise it, has established a valuable prize, to be known as the Inner Temple Book Prize. There will in fact be two prizes, one of £10,000 and one for “young authors” of £2,500, to be awarded for the first time in December 2008. Please visit www.innertemplebookprize.org

Inns of Courts 'Training the Practitioners' Day

I was fortunate enough to be chosen to play a witness for the Inn of Courts 'Training the Practitioners' Day. The day is designed to offer extra advocacy training for those already in practice by giving them a case scenario and having them prepare it as if preparing for an actual trial or hearing, from opening to closing speeches. The event was held for both civil and criminal practitioners.

As part of my role as a civil witness I had to learn the information in the bundle, including the role play instructions.

Fee Repersentaion Unit

Whilst at the Target National Pupillage Fair I went to the 'Pro bono work and Employment Bar' talk. I was really impressed and interested by the representative from the Free Representation Unit and so I have decided to join them. I've joined the induction day mailing list and now waiting for confirmation of dates.

Legal & Non legal Work Experience

As competition at the bar becomes fiercer year after year work placements are becoming increasingly more important in order to secure work after graduation. By carrying out some form of legal related work experience during your time at university, you can gain valuable skills which will set you apart from the competition. Pupillage and training contract providers are more likely to be impressed by applicants who have made the effort to spend time in the workplace to develop their knowledge and experience.

Upcoming Event - Target National Pupillage fair 2008

Ok, people The Target National Pupillage fair has been arranged for Saturday 8th March 2008 at Lincoln’s Inn, London and runs from 10:30am to 3:00pm.

Reference Tip

One thing I wish I was told or found out earlier was the constant need for applicants to supply an academic reference i.e. from your university.

Edit: The Inn of Court scholarship, admission, BVC and Pupillage application forms all require candidates to supply an academic reference and it is the candidate’s responsibility to arrange for references to be sent.

Summer Work Experience !

Well it's summer and once again I’ve been trying to get legal based work experience to;
a) Help me decide whether I want to be a barrister (Which I think I do) or solicitor, and
b) Improve my CV.

Second Year Assignments

Ok, second year of uni and I’ve got assignment deadlines coming up and a lot of friends are already wound up and becoming very tetchy as these results count towards our degree classification. I’ve drawn up a plan of action and already have first drafts of my assignments being reviewed. I’m currently living on soup and my weekend work is becoming a welcomed break from revision and assignment writing.

Work Experience Update

My work experience went great!!

I was employed as an administrator and was able to see first hand the lifestyle and work carried out by solicitors and other legal based professions.

Most importantly I was able to see the structure and workings of law firms and the skills they are looking for in candidates for new roles.
